Cheaper Generics More Likely to Suffer Shortage, Study Shows

Low-priced generic drugs are more likely to experience shortages than medium- and high-priced drugs, according to a study reported by Health Day News.

For the study, researchers analyzed 1.3 billion outpatient prescription claims from commercial health plans between 2008 and 2014. They estimated the probability of experiencing a drug shortage based on the following:


The researchers found that 28 percent of the 1,114 drugs studied experienced a shortage, with low-priced generic drugs at a higher risk for drug shortages versus medium-priced and high-priced generic drugs.
