CMS Releases Proposed Rule Increasing PBM Transparency

November 30, 2018

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released a new rule on November 27 that includes provisions focused on increasing PBM transparency.

The rule, “Modernizing Part D and Medicare Advantage to Lower Drug Prices and Reduce Out-of-Pocket Expenses,” would require PBMs and plan sponsors to define negotiated prices as the lowest possible reimbursement, among other transparency issues.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores, the National Community Pharmacists Association and the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy have all praised the rule.
