Follow-up Phone Calls From Pharmacists Improve Outcomes, Study Finds

A study performed at Antrim Area Hospital in Northern Ireland found that patients who received pharmacist-led phone calls after they were discharged saw a number of benefits.

The calls resulted in fewer hospital readmissions, shorter stays in the case of readmission, and lower hospital costs. The patients who received calls also had better medication adherence.

Senior author James McElnay, BSc, PhD, of Queen’s University Belfast said, “Telephone follow-up allowed clinical pharmacists to give tailored support to patients according to their individual needs.”
