Nebraska, Mississippi lead flu activity this week

Mississippi’s flu activity made bigger gains than any other state in the week ending Jan. 26, according to the Walgreens Flu Index. The top 10 included several other southern states, with Alabama at No. 2, Kentucky at No. 3, Texas at No. 4, and Tennessee at No. 5. As a market, the Tyler-Longview area of Texas (including Lufkin and Nacogdoches) had the greatest gains in flu activity, as measured by Walgreens’ prescription data for antiviral flu treatments.

The highest activity overall for the week was found in Nebraska, with the Lincoln and Hastings-Kearney, Neb., market landing first in overall activity and third in in gains. Southern states had a major presence in overall activity, with Kentucky, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, and Tennessee landing in the top 10.
