Use Antibiotic Awareness Week to Educate Patients

November 9, 2018

U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week is Nov. 12-18, 2018.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says at least 30 percent of antibiotics in U.S. outpatient settings are prescribed unnecessarily. To combat this, the CDC and its partners dedicate an annual weeklong observance to raising awareness about antibiotic resistance and the importance of prescribing and using antibiotics appropriately.

The CDC is asking outpatient healthcare professionals to talk to patients about the possible harms of antibiotics: allergic reactions, C. difficile, and antibiotic-resistant infections.

A partner toolkit is available on the CDC’s website to help healthcare professionals reach patients through newsletters, social media, printable patient education handouts, and more.
