Study Shows Dementia Risk Raised by Hormone Replacement Therapy
A new study shows that women who take hormone replacement therapy to help ease menopause woes might face an increased risk of dementia later in life. Those who received estrogen-progestin therapy had a 24% increased risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, compared to women who never took hormone therapy. Get the full scoop from UPI.
National Recycling Program Addresses Pharmaceutical Plastic Waste
Cabinet Health is launching a nationwide pill bottle recycling program to address the pharmaceutical plastic waste crisis. As part of the program, anyone in the U.S. can request a recycling bag from Cabinet Health and then ship back their old, empty plastic pill bottles (with personal information removed) for free to Cabinet. FDA Grants Fast Track Designation to Gonorrhea Vaccine
MPR shares the news on the investigational vaccine for the prevention of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection. The vaccine candidate is currently being investigated in a phase 2 study in healthy adults 18 to 50 years of age who are at risk of gonorrhea. The FDA’s Fast Track designation will help speed up the development and review of products for serious and life-threatening conditions where there is no treatment.
WHO Set to Warn Common Sweetener as Possible Carcinogen
One of the world’s most common artificial sweeteners will be declared a possible human carcinogen next month by the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer. Aspartame is used in many consumer products, such as Coca-Cola diet sodas. KFF Health News has more on the story.
“Seal of Acceptance” to Help Patients with Rosacea
Sensitive and easily irritated skin is a common issue for people with rosacea, a disorder affecting an estimated 16 million Americans. The National Rosacea Society is now offering a Seal of Acceptance program to identify skin care and cosmetic products that may be suitable for people suffering from this condition. A survey conducted by the society found that 84% of respondents were “very interested” in more guidance on skin care. Chain Drug Review has the story.
